You may smile at the thought, but the power of a big box of donuts is not to be underestimated. Whether it be a weekly 8 AM meeting or a 3-hour power session, fresh donuts and pastries can help improve group dynamics (and so much more).
Here are some things donuts can do:
-
Set a positive tone when gathering a new team together. Food is a known ice breaker and will help put people at ease.
-
Provide that little extra nudge so participants attend personally. With the prospect of a warm apple fritter to add to their coffee, remote attendees may just start showing up for the meeting.
-
Act as a pick-me-up if the discussions go long. Sugar can help improve people’s attention, at least temporarily.
-
Create a convenient pause during tense moments. When discussing contentious topics, people can have an excuse to stand up and move around the room.
-
And finally…create an excuse to end the meeting when the donuts run out. (Ok, that’s a stretch).
The Bottom Line
Project Management is about people. A positive environment for your team encourages a successful outcome. So whatever your motive for buying those glazed or old-fashioned, know that they will make your job a little easier, even if they also make your belt a little tighter.
