• Providence Hospital San Pedro under construction.

Providence Medical Center

Client Background

Little Company of Mary Hospital in San Pedro, California was built in 1925 and has undergone numerous renovations throughout its ninety years of service. It joined the group of Providence hospitals in the early 1990’s.

St Mary Hospital, historical

The most recent renovations include a seismic retrofit and other improvements to bring the hospital up to code. This massive job required the relocation of 59 rooms (including the main lobby), active medical equipment, blood banks, labs, IT/data equipment, offices, nurse lounge, furniture, lockers, and storage.

Our Role

JOA Group handled move management, including coordination, relocation, and installation/testing of medical and technological equipment. In addition, JOA Group performed construction schedule review and construction observation, and assists with budget control, reviewing change orders and payment requests from contractors.

Project Challenges

Since Providence is a very busy hospital, this project faced a number of challenges, including move management of hospital equipment, infection control, temporary egress, and other unforeseen conditions.

The medical gas move, in particular, required coordination with CDPH, OSPHD, and licensing to minimize disruption of Labor & Delivery, Pre-Surgery, Acute Rehabilitation, and Psychiatry. By establishing and maintaining a collaborative relationship with the project team including the architect, structural engineer, hospital management and staff, as well as OSPHD, JOA Group helped ensure that this project moves forward smoothly with minimal disruption to the hospital.
